Private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro are asked to investigate the kidnapping of a little girl. Angie does not want to take the case, and Patrick agrees with her. But the more things that come to light in the disappearance, the more Patrick and Angie question. When all is said and done, will they feel responsible if she is not found alive?
Detective Remy Broussard is a tough as nails cop who has worked his way up the ladder by doing things his way at times. He and his partner are not thrilled that Angie and Patrick have been brought in on the investigation into the disappearance of Amanda McCready so they lay down strict guidelines. They never expect Angie and Patrick to ask questions they are not willing to answer.
When Angie and Patrick discover that people, including the little girl's mother, are lying to them, they do their best to uncover the truth. But as the bodies begin to pile up and there are more questions than answers; they begin to feel there is something deeper going on. Detectives Poole and Broussard finally think things are going their way after a failed money for child swap. But six months later, everything opens up and they are once again faced with questions they cannot answer from Angie and Patrick. As the pieces start to fall into place, the situation becomes volatile and Angie and Patrick are caught in the middle. Is the missing girl still alive or is she just another body to add to the long list they already have?
This book will leave you on the edge of your seat not knowing what will happen next. Mr. Lehane has written a story that is realistic and will have many parents running to check on their children. The subject matter is one that we hear about everyday on the news, missing children. For some, there are scenes that will turn your stomach however in the end you have the feeling that this is something that must be addressed. I believe Mr. Lehane sheds light on what the people behind the scenes of a case such as this go through and the toll it takes on everyone involved. This is a book that will leave you reeling and one that should be read if you love crime stories.
