Vina Chopra comes from a typical Indian family where the child is expected to do exactly what her parents wish her to do. She still listens to her parents and wants their approval, yet she lives her own life in Manhattan and dates non-Indian men. She is struggling with her job and some of the decisions that are being made but does not step up and question her bosses. She also does not see the warning signs until it is too late and her life begins to crumble.
Nick is a lawyer turned fitness instructor, and just happens to be the best friend of the man that Vina's parents wish she would marry. After finally getting their wires uncrossed at a friend's wedding, Nick finally believes he has a chance with her. But like everything else, the wires undoubtedly get crossed again and confusion ensues. Now it is up to Nick to untangle them and still pursue Vina.
Vina's whole life is falling apart. Her boyfriend of over a year has cheated on her and had a baby with another woman. Her bosses force her to fire her intern, but what they tell her does not make sense and they will not answer her questions. She also learns too late that the company she works for is being investigated for insider trading and thus, all this leads to a nervous breakdown. Her family and friends just do not understand. When she returns to New York after her retreat, she realizes that she cannot please everyone and needs to start living her own life.
A wonderful insight into a different culture that feels almost like a different world. Vina is a lovely character and a very strong woman. I could not help but feel respect for the changes that she tries to bring to her family by showing them that it is okay. We all, I am sure, have felt at some point that we just do not fit in with the whole picture. This book proves that if you try hard enough and live your life according to your plans, it is possible to fit in. I cheered Vina on throughout the book and sympathized with her as her parents continued to try and rule her life. The story also brings to my mind the fact that it does not matter what others think of you as long as you are happy with yourself.
