Eva Edwards has had nothing but bad luck and hard times since leaving England. Now her hated husband is dead, leaving her with a stepdaughter to raise and a farm to run.
Tate Brown is from one of the richest families in Toronto, but does not want the life of a socialite. He is a trained veterinarian and plans to raise sheep on the farm he inherited from his Uncle George.
A man and woman clash when they both lay claim to the same farm. Legally the farm is Tate’s, but he cannot ethically turn Eva and her stepdaughter, Maggie, into the world with nothing. They will stay and work the farm until he figures out what to do with them.
The author does a really good job of describing the two and how they fight their feelings for each other. Little Maggie is a great character as is Hilda, and I really hated the snoopy and dishonest postmistress. The author really captures the era and vividly describes the prairie and its people. The plot is a little melodramatic, but engrossing, and the dialogue is easy to follow. The ending is very satisfying.
