Devon Manning is an incredible social worker. She is able to save children just as someone saved her. Devon has experienced the abuse some of these children are forced to endure, but she was one of the lucky ones, she got a set of adoptive parents who love and adore her. It is the abuse that keeps Devon from forming relationships with people. That is, until she meets a doctor who has her rethinking her options.
Dr. Luke Rafferty grew up in a home where he knew his father loved him. He went into the military, serving with the Rangers as a field medic. Wounded, both physically and emotionally, Luke returned home in search of something missing in his life. When he first sees the gorgeous woman who saves children, he believes he may have found that missing piece.
Devon has a lot of hidden secrets and Luke is willing to take it day by day until he knows them all. Luke gets the feeling that someone is watching Devon's home. Brushing it off as just a bad feeling, he ignores it. When a murdered dog shows up in her kitchen, Luke realizes Devon is in danger. Devon is upset by having a stalker. Unsure of who it could be, she agrees to let Luke move in with her at least until the person is caught. The next danger she faces just might be losing her heart to Luke.
When I first started this book, my heart just ached for the children, Devon included. However, reading about how they have found new families and are happy helps ease the pain. The chemistry between Dr. Luke and Devon is terrific right from the beginning. The sexiness of the story with the danger of the stalker really brought this book to life. The characters in this book jump off the page and straight into your heart. Ms. Walker does a brilliant job of putting the reader right in the middle of the action.
