Annie Dugan really did not know what to expect when she took a job as a receptionist for her childhood friend Ric Alvarado. After all these years, she believes him to be the same man he was when they were growing up, after one thing from any woman he saw that was not her. When she gets him to agree that she can help on his latest case, the situations they are put in bring them closer together than ever before.

Ric Alvarado was under the impression if he left the police force and started his own private investigations business, he would not be putting himself in the line of fire. That changed very quickly as his latest client manages to shoot him and puts Annie in danger. He knows that his feelings for her are close to being classified as overbearing and overprotective but he loves her and always has. He just thinks that the more he wants her out of danger, the more he puts her in.

Annie and Ric are lucky they have Jules Cassidy, FBI agent, to help them out when this latest case turns out to be more than hunting down a missing person. Ric agrees with Jules that he and Annie should work with him to get in closely with Gordie Burns Sr. and also keep a close eye on Gordie Jr. But Jules does not expect to find the one man he knows will forever hold his heart in the same city. As luck has it, Robin has walked back into Jules's life. Robin has an opportunity to help Jules with the case and even though Jules wants to keep him safe, Robin ends up in the middle of the danger along with Annie and Ric.

I could not put this book down. This has got to be the best book I have read this year. The action is amazing and the plot thickens as the book progresses. Ms. Brockmann's latest installment in her Troubleshooters series will not disappoint those that have followed this series from the beginning. The characters of Annie and Ric are well suited to one another and there were times I rolled my eyes at the things Ric says and does yet I could not help but love him. Jules and Robin are brought back in this book and the desire they feel for one another has got to be the most profound I've ever read. I have completely fallen in love with this series and that is just from having read one book. If you are a reader who loves to be kept on the edge of your seat, then this is the book for you.
