Candace Steele is a vampire slayer, and in security at a Las Vegas casino. She is confident of her abilities, until one rainy night when her luck goes very bad and she becomes the very thing she hunts. She is turned by the vampire that she loves, in spite of herself.
Ash is horrified to see his Candace dying in an alley. The only way to save her is to turn her, but he is afraid that she will hate him, again. Into this turmoil his old enemies on the Board still seek to eliminate him and Candace.
The Board, an elite group of vampires, seeks the remaining two Emblems of Thoth. These emblems, when combined with a ritual and sacrifice, will grant the members true immortality; in effect making them Gods. Ash and Candace have one of the emblems and only they can stop the Board, even at the expense of their own lives.
This is an action packed novel from beginning until the end. Ash and Candace have wonderful chemistry and love for each other, despite Ash’s diet of human blood. I will have to read the rest of the series, as I am not entirely clear about why they kill their victims. Apart from this and one disjointed sex scene, this was a well-written novel with great characters and plotline. I was never sure what would happen next, or to whom. Aside from Ash and Candace, the other characters were very vivid; especially Carl, Candace’s former lover, the police detective, and BiBi her best friend. I especially liked Chet, the computer geek and would-be slayer. I am a new fan of this series.
