Trella, a former slave is now the wife of the ruler of Akkad. Pregnant and with her husband, Eskkar, away, it is up to her to keep the city safe.
Eskkar has secured his city and his wife the best he could, but he is forced to further protect them by sending his forces to rid the area of bandits and others who would threaten the city, leaving behind a pregnant wife and child.
With Eskkar away securing the territory around Akkad, Trella is left to rule the city. Korthar, a gemstone trader worries her; he is not what he seems. Trella’s worries soon prove correct, and it is up to Eskkar to free Akkad and its people from enslavement, as well as his wife and child.
This is a well-written story set in a little known era in history, the Bronze Age, and is very detailed. The sequel to Dawn of Empire, it stands on its own, but it is helpful to have read the previous work. The characters are charismatic and well developed, and the storyline is exciting and filled with conflict and battle scenes. Although it is not my usual genre, I found myself absorbed in Trella’s life and was gripped by the very interesting story. The characters are flawed and very real. I would definitely recommend this story.
