Duncan Edge is an operative for T-FLAC/psi; every member is a wizard with either full or half powers. Duncan inherited his own powers from a curse placed on his forefather Magnus Edridge by the witch, Nairne, over five hundred years ago. The curse stated that he and his brothers would never know true love with out losing their powers so Duncan vowed never to get involved emotionally. His powers define him and he will never forfeit them for that high a price. He has stayed true to his word but cannot resist teasing and matching wits with the beautiful Serena, his life long friend. Their mutual attraction makes their intense interactions quite volatile.
Serena Brightman Campbell is a full wizard and her specialty is water. Having inherited the running of the Campbell Foundation from her deceased husband, she carries on the humanitarian works he started. Her ability to teleport to anywhere in the world makes it easy to oversee the foundation’s many projects. Her friendship with Duncan is spiced up with the knowledge that she is a direct descendant of Nairne and knows the secret to breaking the curse. She thinks Duncan is arrogant, violent, and brilliant to boot, but knows there can never be a relationship.
When Henry, Duncan’s mentor and head of the council of wizards falls into a coma, Duncan starts to receive psychic messages from him claiming Serena needs help. Serena denies needing Duncan’s assistance and then they are both nominated for the head wizard position, along with their mutual friend, Trey. Duncan, fighting his concern for Serena, competes with his friends in several tests, showing their individual strengths. When Serena and Duncan willingly indulge in a sexual affair, they both know they have no future. And then four wizards are brutally slain and their powers assimilated. Are these two occurrences related?
Ms. Cherry Adair has written an exciting fantasy full of hot sex, an evil morphing villain and a centuries old curse. The antagonistic interactions between the three friends makes for a captivating journey. Psychic powers abound as wizards pop up instantly anywhere in the world and secretly a powerful wizard is gearing up to take control. I got wrapped up in the story from the first paragraph and could not put it down until the surprise ending. Love battles duty in this fantastic book. I loved it.
