Helena married Guy for familiarity and to regain respectability after her family lost their home and position. Her father had worked against King James. Then another Lord came in to claim their property after proving her father’s treasonous acts.

Aaron, Helena’s brother escaped the battle and fled to Holland, where he found a prince to support and fight for. Fighting by the Prince’s side, Aaron helped Prince William claim the throne of Great Britain.

Aaron continues in his support of the Dutch Prince William, and after several years, the Prince comes to Great Britain to bring freedom of religion and to depose King James. Once he secures the throne, he gives his supporters positions in his court. In time, he restores the rights to those who lost their properties for supporting him previously.

Ms. Davison attempts to cover too much ground in too short of a time. She tries to tell us about five years of the characters’ lives within one book. This causes the book to be choppy and therefore the reader does not become involved in the story. For many of the pages, the characters are wholly unlikable, but toward the end, Ms. Davison finally brings human qualities to those same characters.
