Fred Jablin is a well respected college professor and father of three children. Early one October morning he leaves them asleep to get the paper from the driveway. He never realizes this would be the last thing he ever did.
Piper Rountree is described by some as artistic and brilliant; by others as sweet and fun. Others call her the perfect mother. All say she is desperate to get her children back, but how far will she go to do it? Will she resort to murder?
Tina Rountree loves her sister very much, and by all accounts will do anything for her. Does she love her enough to commit murder for her? Blood is thicker than water, but does that mean she will spill it for her?
Fred Jablin is found shot in the driveway of his Virginia home by the police. Immediately his ex-wife Piper becomes a suspect and her activities come under the scrutiny of Virginia and Texas law enforcement agencies. Though she claims to have been in Houston at the time of the murder, all too soon clues begin to point to a very different account of her whereabouts. When records show that it is not Piper who traveled to Virginia, but Tina, the case threatens to fall apart until the modern cell phone catches Piper in her first lie. Soon her whole story begins to unravel despite her protestations of innocence and pleas for people to think of the children. She is arrested for the murder of her ex-husband. The trial and subsequent sentencing for the so-called perfect mother put her in a place where not even her sister can help her.
While I am not usually a fan of true crime stories, this one kept me turning the pages until I found out just who the guilty party was. Then I could not stop reading until I found out how she did it. Unlike fiction, non-fiction is never cut and dried with an ending that is wrapped up in a tidy bow. Because even though the police arrested Piper and the jury convicted her, we will never know why she did it, or how involved her sister was. So I applaud Ms. Casey’s ability to make heads or tails out of a horrible act that turned so many lives upside down.
