Annie Darling is the owner of Death on Demand, a bookstore specializing in mysteries. The store is located on Broward’s Rock, an island off the coast of the Carolinas.
Max Darling is the husband of Annie and the proprietor of Confidential Commissions. He is not a private investigator per se, but being independently wealthy, he can investigate things that interest him. An incident from the previous summer is still affecting him.
Broward’s Rock is usually quiet in February, as nothing much happens in a tourist town in the off-season. This year however, a fortune in rare coins is stolen from a resident, and his housekeeper is murdered. There seems to be no shortage of suspects, but the police, in the absence of the chief who is away on vacation, have settled on the murder victim’s troubled son. Annie and Max can not let an innocent man suffer.
I have always loved this long running series, but have gotten away from it recently. I definitely have some catching up to do. This author is a master at crafting an interesting mystery with many suspects and lots of interesting characters. I loved how she sent Laurel, Emma and Henny away to the Caribbean. They do give their input on the mystery by email, but are not fully involved in the story. Laurel, particularly can be a bit overwhelming in these stories, and this one seems almost like the earliest of the series. Max’s unfortunate experience the summer before is adequately explained without ruining the story for those of us who did not get the book yet. I enjoyed Max and Annie’s teamwork in solving the crime and weeding out the killer and his motivation from so many. Annie has some pretty hair-raising experiences on her way to the truth. Ms. Hart really writes a great story.
