Adrien English owns a book store, Cloak and Dagger. He also writes and does a little sleuthing on the side. Lately Adrien is worrying more about his health. He has a heart problem and needs surgery. But when he is asked to do a little investigating in a murder case, Adrien cannot refuse. The only thing is, he would be working closely with his ex-lover Captain Jake Riordan, and Adrien is not sure if that is good or bad.

Captain Jake Riordan is married to Kate, a fellow officer. Jake had married Kate hoping for a family, he and Adrien had broken off two years ago, and since then Jake has been struggling with his feelings of loss. Jake is in the closet, no one knows he is gay, and he is trying to keep it that way. Jake knew it was unfair to Adrien, and even Kate, but Jake did not want his family to know. Now Porter Jones, a big wheel and screenwriter is dead, and Adrien is investigating it on the side. Jake only hopes with his supervision Adrien will not get hurt.

As Adrien investigates the murder, he is also having trouble with his personal life. Guy, his lover for a couple of years, wants a commitment. But even without working with Jake again, Adrien knows his love for Jake is not gone. But Adrien is not so naïve to think there is any future with Jake either. As Adrien starts turning up leads and secrets come out, both Adrien and Jake have to take a look at the people closest to them. When Adrien thinks he has all the answers, he takes a huge chance. A chance that just might get him killed.

Bravo! This is an absolutely stupendous story. Mr. Lanyon does an outstanding job creating these characters and forming a believable plot that carries out through this tale. I love a good “who done it” and this story keeps the reader guessing from the first page to the last. Set at a fast pace with lots of strong dialog, this story never dulls. Certainly not second is the relationships Adrien has, and true emotions that are related to the reader. his the fourth in Adrien English mysteries, and I for one cannot wait to see more.
