Thutmose-sin, a leader of a band of barbarians, is gifted by the gods, with amazing awareness and craftiness. By killing and enslaving others, his band of barbarians are able to survive. Fearing his enemies may overtake him, he seeks to destroy them.

Nicar is the ruler of Orak. For twenty-seven years he has taken care of it by demonstrating how to grow food to survive. He will do everything to keep his city safe.

Eskkar is an outcast barbarian who has lived in Orak for three years. He is surprised when Nicar summons him to help keep Orak safe from marauding barbarians.

Tella is a common slave girl. She is willful and proud, and has never known a man. After she is given to Eskkar, life seems to offer her promise.

Thutmose-sin is aware his enemy has a powerful tool, one he would like to possess. The enemy can coax food from the ground allowing them to grow in number. He wishes for this power instead of raiding and destroying to find ways to exist. Nicar does not wish to see Orak ruined by barbarians. He summons Eskkar in hopes of warding off any intruders into the city. Eskkar believes even if they drive a small amount of people away, it will only open up to more arriving. As an outcast barbarian, he had seen the distrust and fear reflected in their eyes when he arrived. Then again, if he leaves, he will have to start over. By accepting and accomplishing the mission, as captain of the guard, he will have more than enough gold to keep him happy. After Nicar gives him Tella, a slave girl, Eskkar sees the fear in her eyes from being given to another man. She is there to help him and he needs her help. Her worry gives him strength to carry on. As Eskkar uses his command to urge the people to build a wall for protection, will Orak rally with him to preserve their home before they lose in a battle that can easily change their life forever?

Epic in proportion, Dawn of Empire is a remarkable tale that really is wonderfully done. The reader is drawn into the huge cast of characters that play a role in the pages. Just reading about the leaders with all their challenges in making sure the clan comes together to keep their city safe is spellbinding. I got a feel for the surroundings, even the weary people that pushed themselves to keep going in their plight. Sam Barone has done great research and marvelous depiction in panoramic view in this extraordinary saga. The reader practically becomes a part of history in the making. This outstanding tale moves at a great pace and keeps the reader wrapped until the end.
