DARK WELL OF DECISION
304 Williams Street, Fayetteville North Carolina 28391
Young Adult, Inspirational
Rating: 4 Cups
Thirteen year old Zoe is having a hard time of it. Life on her grandparent’s farm is tough and so is puberty. She is emotional and scared and uncertain of where she fits in. Her grandmother is a dear presence in her life, taking her to church and teaching her the scriptures. Though she does not understand what it means to believe, she soon will.
Kristo and Kitia are members of the Noach people, a derivative of Noah, and watch over the community of Jasper. When Zoe falls down into the well on the farm, she asks God to help her, opening the doors to a magical world that is only seen by believers. Kristo and Kitia rescue Zoe and take her into their community where she will learn wondrous things about God and his plans for her.
With a dog named Areli, meaning the lion of God, as her companion, Zoe sets out on a grand adventure through Jasper where she will come into herself, her beliefs, and be tested against a powerful evil out to destroy her.
Like the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Dark Well of Decision is a grand adventure with a likable girl who is a little like all of us. Zoe’s insecurities are realistically drawn and her struggle with both her faith and the new direction her life will take is poignant. The secondary characters are engaging and add extra “spice” to this story. The references to the Bible and the teachings presented are appropriately captured. Author, Anne Kimberley is an author to watch; her gift for penning a grand childhood adventure is a great one. This one is well worth the time and money spent; I will buy several copies for friends and family.
