Flein Traveler is a messenger who makes his living delivering letters for important people as quickly as possible. He had been advised by several people not to take the road by Loch Shiel under any circumstances. Instead he was advised to take the sea route. He ignored the advice because adding several days to his journey just to avoid a monster seemed silly.
Donnchadh is a waterhorse and the lake is his home. He is one of the lesser Eldren and he considers the area around the lake his territory and the people who live there his prey. He does not normally like strangers, but there is something about Flein that fascinates him. He loves to listen to Flein’s stories about his travels.
However, the murdered girls from the nearby village have captured Flein’s attention. The waterhorse is being blamed, but Flein suspects a different kind of predator all together. Donnchadh takes exception to some other creature hunting in his territory and together they decide to discover what, or who, is killing helpless young women and using the mythical horse as a scapegoat.
I was intrigued by Dark Waters from the moment I read the description. I have never read a story with a waterhorse shape shifter before. I enjoyed the way the author weaved mythology into this story. Both Flein and Donnchadh are really interesting characters to get to know because I was not sure if I liked them, especially Donnchadh. However, Chris Quinton brings out the best in both of his heroes. I also found the mystery very intriguing. This is a very good read.
