Frankie Montalvo is a product of the foster care system. She has had no one to depend on but herself since her father died. A surprise inheritance from a grandmother she never knew and crazy relatives who never claimed her does not change a thing.
Rico Lopez is a disillusioned I.C.E. agent running away from his last case, which went disastrously wrong. He is determined never to get involved too deeply with anyone again.
Something is very wrong on the island of Vieques. Girls are disappearing and according to the talk the dreaded chupacabra is taking them and draining their blood. Rico Lopez knows that something less supernatural is causing the girls to vanish and it is centered around the Casa Verde plantation that Frankie Montalvo is renovating to make a Bed and Breakfast.
This story hooked me very quickly. Rico is a burnt out police officer who just wants to hide from his troubles and heal, but he chooses the wrong place to relax. His mother, who is one of the strongest characters in the story, insists that he help a very distant relative find her daughter. Frankie is just as tough as Rico’s Mami. She is an orphan from New York, who survives the foster care system to make a success out of herself as a hotel manager. Her plans to run a bed and breakfast are stymied at every turn, but she is just more determined. Her relatives are really bizarre characters. Uncle Hector is a bitter drunk and Aunt Margarita is just a bit crazy. Salvador Torres and his entourage are very creepy. Although the real cause of the disappearance of the girls will not be a big surprise, the final scenes are very exciting and will not disappoint. The attraction and love that develops between Rico and Frankie makes for some very steamy scenes. This story really has it all.
