Randa Starr is a hosiery model living a life of luxury. She has a beautiful mansion, clothes, and all the money she could want. She also has Nick, her manager, to take care of her need for rough sex.

Blaise Chardone is a circus performer. He is gentle and caring, everything his partner and older brother Sean is not. He acts as assistant to the circus’s owner Culley.

When Nick nearly beats Randa to death, he runs scared and drops her off at a local hospital. When Randa wakes up, she realizes she has to do something because it is clear that Nick tried to kill her. When Nick makes a second attempt, this time by strangulation while she is still in the hospital, Randa knows she has to disappear. On her journey through homelessness, drunkenness, and deception, Blaise finds her. However, he thinks she is a boy and cannot reconcile his feelings for her. Even when she reappears as a woman he cannot make the connection. And they have another problem; Sean wants her for himself. After Sean is fired for attacking Randa, accidents and murder begin happening at the circus. It becomes a race against time to find Sean and stop him from destroying the circus and their love.

Dark Masquerade is a high-speed ride through the underbelly of inner cities, and the world of circuses. Highly descriptive, it is clear Ms. Godwin did her research. The emotions of both Randa and Blaise are well written, and easy to relate to. The secondary characters fit smoothly into the story and add to the richness of it. My only disappointment is that some of the situations felt contrived to me; because of this they were hard to believe. However, I look forward to more from this author.
