Megan was the victim of a vicious rape five years before. The trauma of that and a leak to the press made her life unbearable and she changed her name, quit her job and moved. She also lost her fiancé who could not handle the situation.
Jack Calhoun is a reporter newly arrived in Lagniappe with his small daughter. His wife decided that she would rather have a career than the two of them.
When a reporter is assigned to research new leads in the five-year-old Gentleman Rapist case, he is unaware that the woman he has come to see as his future is one of his victims. Megan, with the help of her counselor and her beloved protection trained dog, is finally ready for a new relationship; unfortunately the man she wants is resurrecting the nightmare of her past.
The author starts out this story with a bang on Megan’s thirtieth birthday when a stripper brings back the memories of her rape. The story moves very quickly as developments in the case occur and she by chance identifies her attacker. Megan is a very strong character who is slowly overcoming an incident that would have destroyed a lesser woman. In my opinion, Jack expects way too much. He rushes the relationship in a way that even a woman unburdened by Megan’s tragedy would question. Other than that, Jack is a very sexy alpha type character and a good hero for the story. His daughter is very well done, an adventurous little girl who is determined to find herself a new mommy in Megan. I also liked Ginny, the friend and counselor, who never babies but always supports Megan. Sam, the German Shepherd, is very typical of his breed. The plot is very fast moving and the suspense builds nicely until the last very exciting chapters. Enjoy this one.
