Goodmaid Beth likes her life right now. She can hide from the world and keep her secret to herself. Even the elders that run the commune do not know why she is there. She meets Goodman Stephen and feelings that have been dormant for ten years rush to the surface. She does not want to go against the rules, but is not sure how to keep herself in check. It is going to be a test of her will.
Stephen is a reporter who has written all kinds of articles and been around all kinds of different people. He is investigating the unusual commune but sees nothing that is wrong. He has a difficult time focusing on his project once his eyes meet another woman’s across room. He might jeopardize his findings just to help her escape. First, he must convince her to let him help, and then he needs to know what she feels about him.
Living at the Compound and being one of the Penitents keeps Beth in check. The Elders run the place and make sure their rules are followed. The life is a simple one. Men and women are not supposed to intermingle or even talk to each other. She enjoys being there or so she thinks until she caught two of the penitents having sex in the meadow. Now she is wondering if running away to this place had been a good idea. Things get even more complicated when she meets Goodman Stephen. She feels a connection with him that she cannot deny. With a delivery woman's help, she tries to sneak away, doing her best to keep from getting caught since she is seen as very special. Plus, she believes her secrets will keep her in line.
I have always loved fairy tales and this adaptation is amazing! Ms. Yardley has written a fascinating tale. It will not only entice but also raise your temperature a few degrees while reading it. I was surprised at the changes made to this story and really liked them. Ms. Yardley's writing style is refreshing. The characters had flaws, but that is what makes them seem so real to me. This fabulous author can change a classic fairy tale into something hot!
