Kate Howard is working hard to forget Scott Spencer, who has gone back to Australia. She is even more determined to get into vet school. Just before Christmas her father dies and her stepmother falls apart. Not a good time for the mother who abandoned her two-week-old baby to reappear and try to take over her life.

Dan Brown has not made a lot of friends in Barleybridge so far. He is too opinionated and has no tolerance for foolishness, but he needs a home and roots. He is determined to make a go of it in this practice, but winning over the other employees is difficult.

The people of the Barleybridge Veterinary Hospital are very much a family, if a slightly dysfunctional one. With Zoë out on maternity leave and Scott back to Australia, they are desperately in need of a large animal vet, but Dan Brown has yet to make any friends aside from Miriam and Kate.

This is a cozy soap opera type of story. I kind of felt like I landed in the middle of things, so it might be best for the reader to start with the first in the series and move on from there. The characters are all very real and all of their hopes, dreams, and foibles are shown clearly here. This is a warm story of life in the English countryside as seen through the eyes of the people who care for their animals, and I enjoyed it very much.
