May Faulkner has had a rough life. With no one to depend on, she is now self-reliant. She puts up a hard front, but secretly hopes she will someday have someone to be able to lean on. An old friend requests her to tell his story and that brings her to a place that she has only dreamed about. Her Doctor orders her to relax, but time is of the essence with telling the story of her old friend since he is on death row. Will she be able to get through it all without being scarred even more?
Mo Foster gave up his dream to settle down because he listened to other people’s advice and now he regrets the choices he has made. He is a wounded man working at the prison out side of town. His world is about to be turned upside down. He works hard with his band to pursue the dream that he always wanted but will it come at too great a cost for him?
When May decides to tell her childhood friend’s story, she has no idea how her life will change. The stress gets to be too much and May ends up staying with Mo. Close quarters bring emotions to the surface. Being wounded by people they thought loved them makes things even tougher. Mo is just looking for fun while May finally realizes that she wants to settle down somewhere. They have to figure out which will be easier for them, living together or living apart?
Trust is not something that is easy to come by especially when it one has already been betrayed. May and Mo really have to figure out what their desires truly are. Ms. McCain gets right to the emotions and struggles that these characters face. I was pleased with the way she shows that changing their minds is very difficult. I found this book moving and realistic. It was certainly a nice change of pace and I highly recommend it!
