Emilie “Emmy” Deveraux is a witch. In France during the Inquisition she is burned alive at the stake for Heresy by the Church. Only they did not know one thing, Emilie is tainted by demons and fire is her element as a Phoenix.

Zac is a young man in Sydney, Australia, who just happens to enjoy doing good works for the community. He is a Celestial; those that are the polar opposite for the Phoenix. He is as attracted to Emmy as she is to him.

Fate seems to be pulling Emmy right into the path of Zac. Stumbling into Sydney in 2007 from France in 1607 is amazing enough, but running into a blond named Zac seems to be fated. No matter where she goes she runs into him, literally. She learns she is a Phoenix and he is a Celestial, and that is why her body goes into intense pain when she encounters him. The two beings are not to ever meet since usually death results, according to Bea, another Phoenix. Zac, though, seems to be just as attracted and as fate deems it, they make love. He falls from grace, though they save Bea in the process of their escape.

Now I am not going to give the ending because I am hoping for a sequel. This was totally surprising and great, and I am impressed. This is not about good and evil, but about those that are in the grey zone. We are mainly good people but might be tainted by negativity. This is about how fate is destined to bring together two people and I know we do not see how our actions result in their consequences. Would I make different choices knowing the outcome? Maybe, but who knows? I know I am neither angel or demon.
