Joe Grey is a cat with unusual intelligence and crime solving skills. He, along with his love Dulcie and his friend Kit, has the ability to talk, though it is a closely held secret. He lives with his human, Clyde in Molena Point.

A six year old girl who refuses to speak is the only witness to a murder. No one knows her name or where she came from, and her inability or reluctance to talk may endanger her own life.

Christmas is a special time for the inhabitants of Molena Point. They are particularly proud of their spectacular Christmas tree. One night a man is shot beneath that tree leaving a little girl alone and in danger for the holidays, since she is the only witness. Feline P.I. Joe Grey and his friends try to find a murderer and give an orphaned little girl a Merry Christmas.

I did not know how I was going to like a story whose main character is a talking cat, but after a few pages I found that I love it. Joe is smart and the dialogue is witty. The inhabitants of Molena Point are as warm and caring as the cats and almost as interesting. The mystery is engrossing and though the who is clear early on, the why is well worth reading on to solve the mystery. This is my first visit to this long running series, and I am a new convert and will be reading the rest of the books soon.
