Kirke Palmer is a former journalist turned paramedic. Outspoken and honest, she cannot refuse to help a dying man.
Jake Kelly spent seven years in prison and lost his career for a crime he did not commit. Now on parole, he is determined to vindicate himself, or die trying.
When a dying man asks Kirke to deliver an envelope without involving the police, she agrees. This promise involves her with Jake Kelly, a fugitive who may or may not be a murderer. The two of them must stay alive long enough to find a cache of stolen diamonds before the man who framed Jake does.
This story follows a rather predictable plotline, but the characters and dialogue are better than average. I particularly liked Merlin, the attack parrot. Jake and Kirke have great chemistry, and their time on the run is filled with near disasters. The story moves and retained my interest throughout. There are a few unexpected plot twists and overall this is a well written and suspenseful story with interesting characters and a lot of action.
