As an anthropologist, Dr. Bill Brockton has spent his career unlocking death’s mysteries at the Body Farm. Usually the death is distant and easily explained, but sometimes it hits all too close to home, even his own.

Meet Jane Doe, a young woman who found a cave, murdered by persons unknown. Her startlingly preserved body hides many secrets that Dr. Brockton and his assistant carefully unearth. However, someone is willing to kill again to keep those secrets hidden.

When Dr. Brockton is called out to look at the body of a young woman found in a cave deep in the heart of Tennessee mountain country, at first he is fascinated by the preservation of the remains. However, soon he finds that she has been hiding a grisly secret of her own all these years. Added to that is the fact that the Cooke County sheriff may or may not be hiding the identity of the killer, as well as breaking a few dozen other laws, and you have a recipe for a very complicated case. Can Dr. Brockton and the rest of the crew at the Body Farm figure out the identity of the killer before he ends up a victim of Cooke County justice himself?

Being a bit of a country girl myself, I absolutely loved this book! Jefferson Bass did a wonderful job writing about the wonders of forensics without getting bogged down in technical jargon. Instead, the co-authors fell back on the characters and how they worked together, especially the byplay between the doctor, his assistant, and his policeman friend, Art. But some of the major players of the piece are the cast of Cooke County; you never figure out if they are guilty or innocent until, well, you just know. Go out and get Carved in Bone: A Body Farm Novel co-written by the doctor who founded the real Body Farm; if you like forensic mysteries, you will be so glad you did!
