Charlotte Brantley is a writer, and like most writers, Charley needs to research. On her way to the library, as she is making her way up the steps of the university, she accidentally collides with a man. Though she is single and not wanting any romance in her life, Charley cannot ignore the inner stirrings for this man.

Professor Edouard David de Lisle is French and teaches history at the university. He also has a published book under his belt. David realizes that the collision course with Charley was neither going to be his first nor his last and takes steps to ensure he meets her again on mutual grounds.

While out dining with a friend, David spots Charley. Approaching Charley’s table, David reintroduces himself which leads them to take further steps together, steps Charley never thought possible, only in the lives of the characters she writes about in her novels. Strong influences instilled in her from her mother’s old fashioned beliefs, fearing she would be viewed as a wanton woman, lack of confidence and low self-esteem are some of the factors coming into play, detrimentally blocking Charley from entering into romantic liaisons. Unbeknownst to Charley, David has answers to questions she is researching for her latest book and he is soon enlightening her to more than she is envisaging.

Ferjutz explores the emotionally deep crevices of a troubled and indecisive woman, capturing the heart and soul of a woman hiding personal secrets, although Charley is a very likeable character. David’s profound personality shines through. He is charming, witty, engaging and plays games with words which I enjoyed indulging in. A cleverly constructed novel with a cast of fitting characters all relevant to the story. Evolving events unfold for Charley in this moving novel. A truly beneficial story and definitely one to read.
