Dr. Heather Kerry is the Deputy of Superintendent of the Catholic Schools in New Orleans. Heather is a widow and is known as a very fine and upstanding woman in the community. Heather just exists day to day without really living, she has known only one love and that was Wesley Chou. But that was years ago. Until a young lady, Sarah Cleveland, approaches her, she thought all of the past was behind her, only to now be re-opened.
Dr. Wesley Chou is an Oncologist New Orleans. Wesley has also been in the Gulf war but the hurricane that hit New Orleans seemed worse than the Gulf war in ways. Wesley is divorced. Although he hates the loss of the years, Wesley has only ever loved one woman, Heather Kerry. When they were young, their love was strong, but because their parents did not approve of the mixed races, they could not be together. Wesley also knew Heather gave up their baby, and until today, he had not heard from Heather.
Heather is so scared. Sarah Cleveland had asked her about giving up a child, and although Heather denied it, Sarah is pretty sure that the young man Ezra Cleveland is hers and Wesley’s. So many lies so much buried years ago coming back to haunt them now. Both Heather and Wesley were not sure if they should meet with Ezra and Sarah. Then tragedy stuck and everything changed. What might be good thing could easily turn into a disaster.
This is a sensational story that is filled with chaotic twists and turmoil of emotions. From the first page you are ensnared, and from there you will be pulled into this deeply scarred and fascinating tale. Ms. Russell does an outstanding job of creating characters with deep scars and emotional depths that are sure to touch your heart. Like an onion, this story has many layers, and one by one you peel away to find the “buried truth”. This book will make you sigh, cry, smile and gasp and then coming to the end you feel good. This is one of those extraordinary books that come along rarely. This reader is glad it fell in my hands.
