Blythe has moved back to her hometown in Alabama after the death of her husband. She and her young daughter chose to live in an old farmhouse instead of her grandmother’s house in town. Maddie keeps having terrible nightmares and talks to someone that she cannot see, and it terrifies her.
Since his wife left him several years back, Cade has resisted getting involved with another woman. They usually cannot understand his attachment to his hometown and his job as Sheriff. It is a quiet place; relatively untouched by violent crime, until someone targets Blythe and her little girl.
Twenty-five years ago someone brutally murdered a little girl. She knew her killer well and had been abused by him for some time before her death. Most people blame the crime on her father, but the real killer is lying in wait for another victim and is ready to kill again.
This is an eerily suspenseful story that I was sure would give me nightmares. The man stalking Blythe and her daughter is very clever and the reader will not have an easy time identifying the killer. Cade and Blythe’s romance is very gradual and well done and leaves a hopeful note after all of the terrible events of the story. Maddie is a very bright young girl who does not understand why a ghost would be talking to her, and Delores and Ruth are two very feisty old ladies. Crenshaw is a typical small town driven by gossip. This is a tale that will keep the reader at the edge of their seat from start to finish.
