Kane is the oldest of the famous, or infamous depending on whom you talk to, Toren brothers. Prior to their fall from grace, the Toren brothers, pure-breed vampires, were of the elite of vampire society. Kane Toren is bitter about his imprisonment for a crime that he and his brothers are not guilty of committing.
Toni is a member of the vampire drone society, the lowest of the vampire society. She has done many things that she is ashamed of but the one thing she did right was escaping the clutches of her sire. Toni needs the Toren brothers to bring him down.
Kane is reluctant to listen to Toni but two things change his mind. Toni’s sire is none other than the vampire guilty of setting up the Toren brothers to take the fall. For all his need for revenge, there is a greater need and that is for Toni herself.
Stephani Hecht uses a rare theme for this paranormal story, that of a vampire society whose members are not considered to be good enough. Kane is a heart-stopping but tarnished hero with a lot to be bitter for. Despite it all, he is still willing to open his heart and arms. I love the whole scene with the vampire underworld society. The vampires are portrayed as almost human and create compassion for creatures that otherwise would be abhorred. Ms. Hecht makes the vampires seem more normal and less monstrous, which makes this an outstanding reading experience.
