Gayle Fisher is a struggling P.I., having taken over her father’s business. Although she helped solve a murder case, it is not her specialty, but Bill Feinstein’s retainer has convinced her to give it another try.

Eleanor Montague was a talented flautist, married to a pianist. She apparently committed suicide by hanging, but her brother is convinced that she was murdered.

When a young musician dies, the authorities say it is suicide. Her brother is sure it is a murder. Gayle Fisher is hired to find out the truth. She goes undercover as a nurse in the deceased's home in prestigious Shore Haven, where she has to sort through a long list of suspects.

This is a classic murder mystery kind of halfway between the hardboiled detective and an Agatha Christie type story. Gayle is a good character, dogged in her pursuit of the truth. The other characters are similar to those found in all books of this type. There is an invalid parent, a grieving spouse who is not grieving, wealthy relatives, not so wealthy relatives, and semi sinister employees all living in a large Victorian mansion. There is a good subplot about one of her previous cases; Naylor vs. Naylor is almost as interesting as the main plot. A lover of good mysteries is really going to enjoy this story.
