Cassie Shaw has had a hard time growing up dyslexic. It made school and learning unbearable. Yet where she excelled was nature. She loved being a part of it, and when life threw her a new chance and she needed a job, she managed to score a nice one working at an elite university for two professors. But she fibbed a bit in order to get the job.
Professor William Conner, an expert in animal behavior, finds Cassie intriguing. He sees Cassie for who she is. He sees beyond what her resume says as he watches her bloom into the person she wants to be. He cannot help being drawn to her.
With a series of men problems, an African Grey parrot as a best friend, and a little lie told, Cassie is not sure where her life is going. She is being transformed into the person she always wanted to be, but feels she does not deserve to be. Yet, it can all come crashing down at any minute and she could lose all she has worked for.
A Version of the Truth is a quirky tale of one woman’s journey to self-fulfillment. I enjoyed the comedic actions of a very spoiled parrot named Sam. I also felt that the story seemed to drag in a few spots, but did not affect the way the storyline progressed. Overall, I would say Ms. Kaufman and Ms. Mack have written an entertaining story.
