Charlotte Haversham marries the Earl of Marne, George Mackinnon. After only a week of marriage George disappears, taking Charlotte’s dowry and wedding ring with him. Charlotte travels to her husband's family home in Scotland to find George and answers, only to find Castle Balfurin nearly empty and in bad need of repairs. So Charlotte set about taking care of her new home. That was five years ago, and now George has returned.

Dixon Mackinnon comes home to Balfurin to find his cousin disappeared, and his wife Charlotte at home, alone. Before Dixon can tell Charlotte who he is, she assumes he is George. Now Dixon is confused and sure something is not right. So he continues to pretend he is George until he can find some answers. Dixon was not expecting he would fall in love with Charlotte.

Charlotte has managed to save the Castle and with her Lady’s School, earned money to make sure things run well. But now that George is back, things seem different: George does not seem to act like the same man. Dixon has been making inquiries and learns George had gone searching for the treasure believed hidden at Balfurin, and either has found it and left with his treasure or met up with foul play. And as Dixon and Charlotte become close, Dixon knows it is only a matter of time before Charlotte learns the truth.

Stunning! Autumn in Scotland is an extraordinary read. Ms. Ranney is a talented author with the ability to take you back into time with her vivid descriptions, era dialect and knowledge of the time. You can almost picture Balfurin the first day Charlotte arrives, or the look on her face when she first sees Dixon. Romance, being swept back into time and traveling to far away places is what stories are suppose to be about, and Ms. Ranney is true master at it. This one will definitely go on my keeper shelf.
