Madelyn Hayward is a misfit among the Ton. She is clumsy and never knows the right thing to say. All she wants to do is go home to Willowbrooke Cottage, but her stepmother is determined to use her to make a brilliant match.

Gabriel Devine, Duke of Wolverest has had matchmaking mamas and their daughters after him for as long as he can remember. Determined to never marry, he has devised an ingenious scheme to leave himself free and marry off his flighty younger brother.

Seven young ladies have been chosen to compete for the affections of Lord Tristan Devine, heir to the Wolverest Dukedom. One of those ladies has no interest in competing and can not understand why she was chosen to be among the elite. The arrogant duke finds himself drawn to Madelyn against all common sense.

This is a wonderful first effort for Ms. Parker. In a scheme reminiscent of a certain reality show, seven women compete to marry the heir to a dukedom. Tristan is handsome but certainly no prize. Madelyn fruitlessly tries to convince her insecure friend of this fact, but Charlotte is dazzled and will do anything to win the prize. Her efforts to avoid winning put her straight in the path of Tristan’s arrogant older brother, who falls in love in spite of himself. The characters in this story range from the ridiculous sot Lady Beauchamp, selfish Lady Hayward, and the duke hunting twins, to the slightly sleazy but very attractive Lord Rothbury. The contestants are pretty and slightly silly, Charlotte included, and their chaperones are conniving to win the prize. Madelyn and Gabriel have an intense chemistry and their loves scenes are scorchers. If this is her first novel, I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.
