Historical Romance
Rating: 4 Cups

Fiona Lachlan may have finally reached rock bottom. She has lost her job as a seamstress, and is rapidly coming to the end of her funds. A lady of Quality, she dreads what she may have to do to survive.

The Duke of Holborn is a rake and a gambler, but something draws him to the beautiful Scotswoman who saved him from an assassination attempt. Nick has never felt like a duke, thanks to the disapproval of his twin uncles and the antics of his ex-opera dancer mother.

Someone wants the Duke of Holborn dead. Nick thinks that it might be his former friend, the man who stole his signet ring on his Grand Tour. Fiona has survived the death of her family, having her brother outlawed by the Crown, rape, and poverty, but her association with Nick may just be her downfall.

This is a wonderful historical romance. It is full of drama, excitement and passion between two very vivid and contrary characters. Though he does not think so, Nick is very much the Duke and proves it time and again in the story. Fiona is amazingly strong. Her life should have made her either apathetic or bitter, but she continues to fight for what she wants and for what she believes in, never taking the easy way out like her friend Grace. Holborn’s family is fascinating; from the former dancer turned duchess to the stuffy would be dukes. It is very difficult to figure out the villain, so many possibilities exist, but the climax is well worth waiting for. I read this one in one sitting since I had to find out what was going to happen next. Nick’s cousin’s story should be very interesting.
