| AS THE DARKNESS DEEPENS MICHAEL CALE ISBN# 1-55316-138-6 March 2005 LTD Books http://www.ltdbooks.com/ E-Book $5.00 166 pages Horror/Paranormal/Mainstream Rating: Christopher Jones is an ordinary man, until one day tragedy turns him into someone extraordinary. He becomes the possessor of a power that is both wonderful and frightening at the same time. A power that some would kill to possess. Newton’s third law nails this book's premise, and the secondary character, who is never given a name except Other. This describes his personality very well. To call him the antihero would be totally correct. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. For every good there is evil. For every hero there is a villain. What would you do with the power to heal all illness with a single touch? Christopher Jones is a single parent raising his daughter Sally the best way he can in a rundown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Each day is the same. He takes her to school and carries on to his boring job. Until one day, the unthinkable happens and he is irrevocably changed. Enter his nemesis, the Ying to his Yang, the black to his white, either he is destined to join with him or destroy him. Peppered with strange and frightening zealots, modern day snake oil salesmen, and angry clergymen; this book rips through your perceptions on what is good and what is really evil. This story built slowly, giving the reader a growing sense of disquiet, vague disgust, and finally all out chills when the full picture became apparent. The “Other”, a total negative of Christopher’s amicably bumbling nature compelled you to watch his actions and at the same time, made you want to look away. The sweet, warm relationship between the main character and his daughter contrasted vividly with the cold alien nature of the ultimate in evil twins. As The Darkness Deepens is a page turner from beginning to end. Jenn Reviewer For Karen Talk About New Books Reviewer For Coffee Time Romance |
