Rebecca Colfax is as down on her luck as anyone could be. After losing both of her parents, she marries Benjamin Colfax. When he gambles away everything her parents left her, he takes off leaving her penniless and pregnant. She leaves her son in an orphanage in St. Louis and goes to work at the Scarlet Garter, a saloon in Oaktree, Kansas.
Slater Forrester works as a card dealer at the Scarlet Garter. Andrew, the owner of the saloon, is like a father to him. When Andrew hires Rebecca, who calls herself “Glory”, Slater sees that she is not the usual “working girl” that he sees in the saloons.
Rebecca works hard and even takes on additional duties at the saloon while trying to save money to return to her son. When criminals arrive in Oaktree and tragedy strikes the Scarlet Garter, Rebecca and Slater begin working close together to keep the saloon running. They cannot deny the attraction between them but they both have reasons to push one another away. Slater has a troubled past and Rebecca is still married.
A Reason to Sin is a very enjoyable romance set in the old west. All of the characters, including the minor ones, are very well developed. The dialogue is smooth and the story flows easily keeping the reader interested. I particularly enjoyed the descriptive scenes and in-depth emotions of the characters which really helped bring the novel to life. Maureen McKade’s newest novel is a pleasing and satisfying read.
