A RAKES GUIDE TO PLEASURE
Rating: 4 Cups
Emma Jenson is taking a big risk, pretending to be Lady Denmore, an eccentric widow unknown to the aristocracy, who has recently arrived in London. Emma is really the niece of the late Lord Denmore, running from an unwanted suitor. Her uncle's acquaintances soon accept her. Emma uses eccentricity as a guise to gamble, when gambling is really the reason she has risked making the move to London.
The Duke of Somerhart is known by some as "Winterhart" because of his many relationships with the widowed members of London's upper class. Until he meets Emma, Hart is cold, arrogant, and uncaring after being embarrassed by a former lover.
London in 1844 is a place of rules and expectations. Breaking all of the rules soon gains Emma a reputation for the gambling she seems to enjoy. When she meets "Hart" her strong will starts to slip. She must be strong to keep her secret hidden. The only way is to put distance between them. Hart has not been this interested in a woman for a long time. He knows she has secrets and other admirers. Can he risk his heart to some who will not tell him the truth?
Miss Dahl has created fun and lovable characters. She depicts London at a time when expectations were high. It was also a place where life was very strict. A Duke was expected to maintain a certain level of behavior. A lady was expected to maintain the home and do as she was told. Even as both characters break most of the rules, they are still believable and realistic.
