Axel O’Grady is eleven years old and alone. His parents died when he was younger. When he meets Nate Greenleaf, he cannot believe his luck. A true friend! After the tough time Nate had, they became the best of friends and Nate helped Axel become a newsie, selling newspapers on the street corner. They had a crate to sleep in, so things were not too bad, until the fight.
Nate Greenleaf taught Axel how to live off the streets of New York. Being thrown out of the orphanage at seven to give younger kids a bed, Nate knew how to get around. But Nate is glad of the new friend he found, and they both became very close, until the fight.
Axel and Nate were doing fine, until a bully put Nate in the hospital and had Axel sent on a train to Iowa, where people picked up kids for helping hands or sometimes, if they are lucky, adoption. But before Axel left, he promised Nate they were partners forever, and he would be back. In Iowa, Axel finds a couple who needs his help in the store they have. And every chance Axel gets, he makes a little money to put back for a train ticket. But then things started to change and trouble seemed to be in this little town. Axel began to fret he would never see his friend again, nor would he be able to keep his partner’s promise.
Astounding! Partner’s Promise is a heartwarmingly beautiful tale that will stay with you long after you close the book. Extraordinarily written, this story is rich with emotions and values carried out by two very determined orphans against impossible odds. Wonderful characters you fall in love with and engaging dialogue keep this story at a steady pace. The determination and strong values that this young one shows could be a learning lesson for us all. An absolute must read.
