Nick Bertetto, no longer an investigative reporter with the Indianapolis Standard, manages his time as a stay-at-home dad and freelance writer. After his wife Joan was involved in a kidnapping with his last story that had turned sour, it left many repercussions on their married life. He left that line of work, promising never to return, until a homeless man gives him a message that has him plunging head on into the crisis.
Joan suffered much mental anguish with the kidnapping. She was able to return to her pharmacist job, but the events left her marriage to Nick with some problems in which they are learning to adapt with the help of a therapist.
Elijah Smith, a homeless man, gives Nick a message about Calvin Cahill, an Indiana State Representative, who no one has seen for days and was wearing red the last time he was seen. He believes angels speak to him and someone close to Nick may be in danger.
Nick has been taking care of four and a half-year-old daughter, Stephanie, and his emotionally frail wife Joan, but there is still something missing that eats at him desperately. He yearns for the investigative work he left behind to care for his family full time. After Nick is given a message by Elijah, after almost hitting him on his way from picking up Stephanie from school, Nick feels that this is one story he must pursue. Even though bound to his duty to Joan after her terrible kidnapping ordeal, the strong ache he holds inside for his investigative work still springs to life when he learns of the disappearance of the Indiana State Representative, and the strings connected to his departure. When Elijah confesses that someone he knows will die, Nick decides he must investigate, never realizing the consequences, even though he is torn with duty to his family. As he throws himself into the search, he soon learns that it may not only cost him his marriage, but his life as well. But this is one quest he strongly feels he must conduct.
With a magnetic plot and impressive reporting as emotions run high, Angels Whisper is a story that engages. I absolutely love the character of Nick. His genuine awareness to the feelings of his wife and his job, along with his humbleness, makes him one incredible caring hero in my book. Thanks to Tony Perona for making a story believable in every way; with in-depth characters that instill breath into this fabulous read. Full of tailspins that reach out and grab, this mystery is one book hard to put down. I do not think that I will ever forget the character that the author has created in Nick. He is a caring individual and his charisma is what makes this story so incredible. Tony Perona really kept this reader engaged in this magnificent mystery that deserves 5 cups. It keeps one guessing until the end.
