Raphael Rivera better known as Reaper to his merry band of vampires is still on the hunt for Gregor. His former life as a loner hunting down rouge vampires for the CIA has been replaced. He is now the reluctant but surprisingly grateful leader of his own gang of vigilantes.
Briar is still trying to maintain her icy cold-hearted attitude, but she is finding it harder every day. Reaper and the rest of the crew are slowly working their way under her skin, and she is not at all appreciative. She learned the hard way that caring leads to pain, and she has had enough pain to last many lifetimes.
Briar cannot decide if she wants to protect the crazy child-like Crisa or put her out of her misery. Each day seems to bring her closer to caring for the nutcase, and she is not at all sure if it is just the blood bond talking. She seems to feel Crisa’s pain, literally. Reaper realizes that Briar is becoming more and more attached to Crisa, and he cannot help but be relieved. His feelings for her are becoming much more than just a sexual attraction, and knowing only bits and pieces of her past, he is pleased to see her coming out of her shell. Briar trusts no man, and for good reason, but somehow Reaper is setting himself apart from the demons in her past. She has never felt pleasure in a man’s arms until Reaper. He makes her feel, makes her want, and that scares the un-living hell out of her.
This is the perfect book for curling up on the couch on a cold dark night with a warm drink and a crackling fire. The players are spooky as well as undeniably sexy, and the action is spell-binding. Each character brings a uniqueness that provides layers of intrigue and depth to the plot. Briar, just like her name implies, is sharp and unyielding, using her anger as a defense mechanism to shield her heart. She and Reaper are both damaged souls, but the fire they feel in each others arms helps to melt away the pain. The emotions as well as the actions in this story will keep you glued to the pages, and the excellent writing of Maggie Shayne will have you coming back for more.
