Maggie O'Dell is still trying to come to terms with the killer that got away after four years. Now she is faced with a new case. Three women or what is left of them by the killer have appeared around the D.C. area and she is called in to begin a profile. She does not have much to go on other than the killer only leaves the heads behind. When she is pulled off the current case to help with one where priests are being murdered she does not expect to see the one that walked away.
Detective Pakula knows that there is more to the case of the dead priests than he is seeing. So when the FBI is called in, he hopes they will be able to help him piece the puzzle together. Two priests and one ex-priest have been murdered, and he thinks there may be something darker than what the church is telling the police. He hopes they can catch the criminal before he can kill again.
When Maggie arrives, she and Pakula have an instant liking and respect for one another which will make the case much easier for both of them. Helping each other to piece together clues and investigate the members of the local archdiocese is harder than they expected. When Nick Morelli enters the picture, Maggie remembers the last case they worked together, the one where Father Michael Keller walked away with his freedom. But now they have another killer on the loose and not enough clues to make them happy. They must find the killer before he kills again even if the killings can be classified as justice.
A completely amazing thrill ride from the very beginning. Ms. Kava writes thrillers as though she herself has been the agent or police officer involved in the case. The storyline holds true to what one would imagine would be the way an investigation would be handled. The research into what goes on behind the scenes of police work is marvelous. Never once did I imagine it would be any other way than how she has described the scenes. An awe inspiring work of police investigation and I look forward to reading more of her books in the very near future.
