Miri Johnson travels back in time from 2006 to 1866, unsure how she got there or how to get back. She finds it difficult adjusting to the time’s expectations of women after being independent for so long.

Matthew McCade at first seems the typical nineteenth century riverboat captain; he has a way with the ladies, revels in gambling and wants nothing more than to drift up and down his beloved river. He certainly has no plans to settle down with just one woman.

As Miri struggles to make her way, she must discover whether she wants to risk her independence for a chance at happily ever after. A childhood parented by a mostly absent riverboat chasing father taught her to trust no man. Matt’s struggle to give up his independence and place his trust in Miri is equally hard as he learns more about Miri and where she claims to come from. Jake, Matt’s cousin, is both friend to Miri and spur in the flank to Matt, using his devilish jibes to prompt Matt to thoughts beyond the surface when necessary. Matt’s sister Elizabeth befriends Miri, becoming her confidante in times of conflict.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read! Factually sound, there were enough humorously light moments to hold this reader’s interest. Ms Shenberger created characters that are strong and vibrant; each stood out with their own traits and quirks, making them unique. Although this was definitely Miri and Matt’s story, Jake and Elizabeth were equally strong characters. I particularly like the twist on the last page that spins on its head all I expected would happen in Elizabeth’s love life. Overall, this is a very well written story bringing the author’s skill with words to the fore.
