Cardin Worth is used to being around fast cars and fast men; her family is in the racing business and has been since her great-grandfather ran moonshine. She works at Headlights, a family-owned restaurant for forty years, waitressing for her grandfather and listening to the rumors and stories fly about town life.
Trey Davis works as a mechanic on the racing cars, traveling around with his pit crew. A year ago his father died from a fight he had with one of the Worth family members. Deciding that he is ready to figure out what went down, he stays behind to get things straightened out.
Cardin and Trey had always liked each other, seeing one another from afar until the night seven years ago when an erotic voyeuristic scene brought them together. Now Cardin is ready, willing, and able to get both of their motors running; she just needs one favor from Trey first. She wants him to pretend to be her fiancé, this way helping her father and mother get back together from their estrangement. What starts out as make-believe quickly turns into something entirely different as Cardin realizes her feelings for Trey are more than just a made-up fantasy.
A Long, Hard Ride is a Romeo and Juliet type contemporary story of how far two lovers will go to end a feud between family members. Ms. Kent is a great writer; however, in this instance I felt there was just something missing. A connection was not being made between her book and the reader. The sex scenes were definitely spicy and erotic, the emotions both Cardin and Trey showed were nicely done, and the family dynamics were explosive. Overall, this was a nice read but it was a little disappointing to be getting just a nice read from an otherwise great author.
