A FAMILIAR FRIEND

The beautiful Reverend Kathryn Koerney is very busy with her voluntary duties at St. Margaret’s Church, and teaching at the Seminary at Harton College. She also has a flair for crime solving with her good friend, Police Chief Tom Holder.
Tom Holder is secretly, or not so secretly, in love with Kathryn. He has no hope for anything more than friendship due to his loveless marriage, and her love for Kit Mallowan. He is good at his job, in spite of the interference of an attention seeking District Attorney.
When Kathryn’s good friend Tracy Newman finds the body of the well known but unpopular head of the Spanish Studies Department in the driveway of St. Margaret’s Church, the parish and community at large are in an uproar. District Attorney Silverman wants Tom Holder to solve the case at once. Kathryn is personally involved and ready to help. But the murderer is not done yet.
This is a mystery of the classic type; well written with great characters and a surprising ending. Kathryn and Tom are vivid characters, so real the reader will feel they know them. The supporting characters are equally well drawn, from Mrs. Warburton, the housekeeper, to Valerie, the campus femme fatale. The subplot of the disappearance of Tom’s wife could have been a little more developed, but it did add to the story and will be essential to subsequent tales. The plot was well done, leading the reader along to the conclusion, but not giving anything away.
