Jean Macrae is kidnapped by a man set on revenge against her father. She is worried that he will either rape or kill her but yet she finds herself strangely attracted to this dark, handsome man. She knows that her family will be worried and tries her best to contact them with mind touch, but is not successful. After saving the ship during a huge storm while at sea, she is granted her freedom to return home. Little does she know that her adventure has just begun.
Nikolai Gregori has been blinded by the rage he feels against the man that left him to suffer at the hands of Barbary pirates. He sees his opportunity for revenge in the form of Jean Macrae, daughter of the man that left him to die. After so many years, he has not given up on the revenge but has also freed others bound on slave ships. He only has two forces that keep him going, revenge and freedom. Now he has Jean and soon he realizes that their fates are bound together.
When a woman unexpectedly appears in the library of Nikolai's house, both Jean and Nikolai are shocked. But as her story unfolds, they both know that the mission she is speaking of is one they need to make together. They must work together to plant the seeds of the abolition movement over the space of fifty years. As they travel through time, their feelings grow along with the movement. At the end, neither of them know if they will stay together or separate. Is their bond strong enough to keep them together?
An amazing tale of adventure and magic. I found this to be a very enlightening story and a lot of the facts I did not know before I read this book. Ms. Putney has done extensive research into this area of history and it shows on every page. This book brought home the fact that even though we all know that we are free, we take that for granted everyday. Ms. Putney has brought to light facts that will have the reader thankful everyday for the freedoms that we have and sorrow for the ones that have come before us who were not so blessed. A truly touching story that should be on every bookshelf.
